Divorce is not a Dirty Word

Week Four Day Four

(21) Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. (20) On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." (18) If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. (17) Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. Romans 17-21

I know, I know ...the verses are mixed up. Just give me a second to explain.

Several years ago I attended a seminar for victims of childhood sexual abuse. One of the major issues for people dealing with that problem is forgiveness. The speaker read these verses to us, in this order and it truly made sense. I think the same will apply to you.

Do not let the evil or the aggravating things people do overcome you. You can overcome anything by doing good in God's eyes. He warns us not to take revenge, because if we do then God stays out of it. If we leave it with Him, He handles it in ways we will never know about.

I don't know about you, but when someone hurts my child I want to "get even." I want them to pay. Well, God is the same way. Yet, He wants to handle it for us. We are His children and He doesn't like anyone to hurt His children in any way. So, CHILL OUT!!!

Verse 20 is the hardest to deal with, and just doing it to be doing it isn't enough. I think we have to feed or be nice to our enemies with as sincere a heart as possible. Please don't misunderstand. I don't think it was the Lord's intention for us to become our enemy's door mat. However, we are to "kill `em with kindness" so to speak.

Living at peace with those around us is a remarkable sign of maturity. Yet, when we reach a point of true forgiveness and let go of the pain others have caused us, we are at peace with ourselves, and my friend that is wonderful.
