Divorce is not a Dirty Word

Week Seven Day Four

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. . .You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. Ephesians 4:17-26

This is one of those rare writings in the works of Paul where he says "I." He thinks the message he is writing to the people at Ephesus is so important that he "insists" they adhere to it. He stressed the importance of not living in darkness being driven from our own "understanding" (Prov. 3:5-6), rather we are to change our attitudes.

One of the first steps in changing our attitudes is to be aware of the self-talk that is being generated by our thinking at all times. It was once explained to me that our brains are like computers. What goes in must be reprogrammed. If we completely delete everything that is there, we can have no wisdom, because wisdom is accomplished through the truth of a situation. Could we understand this without Solomon's wisdom regarding the baby two mothers claimed were theirs? His wisdom in that situation pointed out the real mother. He knew the real mother because she would rather give up the baby than see it killed. So, instead of deleting the information we process it.

When we look at the situations of our lives through God's light, our understanding becomes His knowledge residing within us. We speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15). When faced with a genuine encounter of God's grace it is hard to remain ignorant. We are challenged to change, to make new choices. (To be continued. Just think about changing your attitude...one step at a time.)
