Keep Your Heart
Above all else, guard your heart,
for it affects everything you do.
Our feelings that we have of love and desire often dictate how we live our lives. Why? Because our thoughts are on what we enjoy. We will readily make time to be with someone when we're in love (whether it is a brotherly, erotic, or godly love), and ignore what doesn't strike our fancy at the time. We will pursue what we are in love with... Solomon tells us to guard our hearts, in other verses it tells us to think on things which are good pure lovely, things that will lead us in the right direction.
We have to be the one that puts up boundaries on our desires. When we're having struggles in an area; for example: lust - if we are constantly filling our minds with things that will further that lust, we become further from victory over that struggle. On the other hand if we are filling our minds with good thoughts (the word of God most of all) then we will eventually find ourselves strong enough to overcome.
Just because something comes across our path, does not mean that it is meant for us to take it in our lives and give it our love, time and attention. Some things are planted in our paths to cause us to stumble. That is where praying for discernment comes in. We need to seek the Lord for His will for our lives. If we don't have peace for a situation it is a clear sign to us to either wait on it or stay clear. Singles, when desiring a mate, often meet someone and give their hearts away too quickly. It's too easy when on this kind of path, to get involved way over our heads, and fall into sin. It's like falling into a pit with no way of getting out on our own.
Mark out a straight path for your feet.
Another reason for us to be careful where our thoughts lead us is that our lives are a constant witness to others. Ask yourself this question. What is my life showing others, good things or bad things or a confusing mixture? You may think that what you do is ok and that there is no harm in having some of these things in your life. Maybe these things don't have a hold on you, but when we are with someone (who although we may not realize it) are weak in an area our witness tells them it's ok to give in to their weakness. Our witness is helping them to stumble. When I am witnessing I have learned to be careful to make sure that it is the Lord leading me to share a part of who I am or where I've been. Some folks just can't handle the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Sometimes we want to make a big impression for the Lord, and all we end up doing is letting them see us instead of Jesus. The word tells us to lift up the Lord and "HE" will draw all men unto Him.
Lord I pray that I will follow hard after you when my desires lead me. Lord lead me not into temptation, deliver me from ungodly wants and desires. Purify my heart and mind and write your word on my heart that I will not sin against You. For Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
In His Love,
