"Now the Lord is Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
2 Corinthians 3:27
It seems like every month we have some holiday or special celebration day set aside to recognize some group, individual or event. Some appear to only be opportunities for government holidays, such as Columbus Day. Others are seemingly used for big retail promotions: "Big Presidents' Day Sale - All Week Long!" Then there are those where we truly honor people we love and care about, Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc. And of course, the most important holidays for us as Christians are Christmas and Easter, which highlight events we really should celebrate all year long. But one of the biggest holidays we celebrate as a nation is Independence Day, when we recognize our freedoms.
Now I know what you are going to say. With some of the recent court rulings, it appears our government is attempting to take some of our freedoms away, and based on what I believe our Founding Fathers intended, that is quite true. But unfortunately, our nation's leaders no longer have that zeal for knowing God, and it shows in the condition of our nation. With the recognition now of hundreds of "religions" besides Christianity, there are people in our schools and civic organizations who may be practicing Satanists or members of a coven of witches. Our own armed forces recognizes the latter as a'"religion" and even allows them to meet on Army bases. Now I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want them'"praying" over my grandchildren or anyone else at the beginning of a school day or at a social function. With that in mind, perhaps the ruling against school prayer isn't all bad.
Before you start jumping to conclusions, let me make my point. We are in a serious situation in our nation today because we have abused our freedoms. We have the freedom to attend church and worship, but approximately half of the people in our country do not attend church with any regularity. We have the freedom to pray in our homes and read our Bible each day, but how many days do we fail to do so? Our responsibility is to use our freedom and pray for our nation and our leaders. Pray that God will convict the hearts of our leaders to make the right decisions. Pray that God will call out righteous men and women to take more leadership roles and help turn our nation back to Him.
Yes, I think we should be free to pray openly in school or any other setting we desire, but that will only happen when the people making and enforcing our laws are directed by the Holy Spirit. Let's pray that the Spirit of the Lord will once again cover our nation and bring true freedom to the hearts of mankind. Only through Jesus can real freedom be found.
"Jesus said,''If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.' " John 8:31-32
