When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he looked up to heaven and
said, "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son so he can
give glory back to you. For you have given him authority over everyone in all
the earth. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. And this is the
way to have eternal life – to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the
one you sent to earth. I brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything
you told me to do. And now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the
world began."
John 17:1-5
How can we know God? Before our Father revealed His truth to me I had no clue who He was. As I began to search His Word, I found God to truly be a Father, not like an earthly Father who often fails us, but the perfect Father who cares for His children; a Father who wants to share His glory with His children so much that He sent His only natural Son from His glorious Kingdom to live, love, and die as a human being to make us a part of the royal family.
Through the ministry of Jesus on earth, God reveals His heart. Jesus said in
John 14:1, "Don't be troubled. You trust God, now
trust in me." When I was a little girl, the words to a very
popular song stuck with me,
"Love and marriage, love and marriage,
go
together like a horse and carriage.
This I tell you brother.
You can't
have one without the other."
So, it is with God and Jesus Christ. You
cannot have one without the other. To love the Father is to love the Son, and to
love the Son is to love the Father. Then, the added blessing is that we receive
the Comforter, the Holy Spirit who guides and teaches us about both of them.
Won't it be wonderful when we die to know that we have done everything God told us to do? If we have failed in this area, we can begin today to listen to the heart of God in our circumstances. When a person comes to your mind – pray for them; if you feel compelled to call them – do it now! Maybe a hand written note is just what a person needs to regain strength. Believe it or not – your life can make a difference. Let today truly be the first day of the rest of your life. May the hope of Christmas be lived out through all you say and do!
