God said, "It’s not good for the Man to be alone; I'll make him a helper, a
companion."
God put the Man into a deep sleep. As he slept he removed one of
his ribs and replaced it with flesh. God then used the rib that he had taken
from the Man to make Woman and presented her to the Man.
The Man said,
"Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh! Name her Woman for she was made
from Man."
Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his
wife. They become one flesh. The two of them, the Man and his Wife, were naked,
but they felt no shame.
Genesis 2:18 (The Message)
Okay, I can almost hear all the jokes now. You know what I’m talking about the ones that indicate that once God created man He felt He could improve things by creating woman. Then there are those jokes that indicate that the wo in wo-man should really be spelled "woe-man." Of course that could go both ways; one being the Fonzie "woe," or two, the "woe" of troubles. In any event, God knew Adam needed a "helper."
Can you imagine Adam's joy when he finally has someone to talk to? Oh, I'm sure the Lord talked with him from time to time, but to have someone on his level and pretty too? Oh, I imagine there was celebration in the garden that day! Their relationship was new and I'm sure it took time to develop. They were literally "new" people, "new" creations. Not only were they "new" to themselves, they were "new" to each other.
They worked together side by side in the garden and they learned about everything. They were truly helpers. The Trinity was there to teach them one-on-one. So, there they were getting to know each other and getting to know God and His world. Wow, it had to be overwhelming at times!
As I have grown in my walk with the Lord I have enjoyed listening to people's testimonies. I am amazed that people can come to know Him early in life and maintain that relationship over a lifetime. Yet, I am just as much in awe as when someone who never thought of Jesus until late in life turns his or her life over to Him. Still, it doesn’t matter at what age a person comes to Him, we all need a helper or a friend.
God Calling* had a few words to emphasize this point.
"Each word of
thought of yours can be like a pearl that you drop into the secret place of
another heart, and in some hour of need, lo! the recipient finds the treasure
and realizes for the first time its value."
It is amazing how much we all need one another. Life is truly not for Lone Rangers. We all need a Tonto. We need a friend, a companion, someone who will be there for us in the rough times and in the good times. Do you have that? If not, ask the Lord to guide you to someone today.
Father, we join together as the Body of Christ across this miraculous thing called the Internet. Our hearts are joined by the power of Your Holy Spirit and we are connected by Your grace. Father, enjoin us to devote our lives to encouraging one another to press on in service to You. Thank You for providing us this time to share our deepest concerns. Help us to do this for Your good and Your glory. We thank You and praise You for the hope we have found in You for this day!
