Then they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city and a tower that reaches
Heaven. Let's make ourselves famous so we won't be scattered here and there
across the Earth."
GOD came down to look over the city
and the tower those people had built.
GOD took one look
and said, "One people, one language; why, this is only a first step. No telling
what they'll come up with next—they'll stop at nothing! Come, we'll go down and
garble their speech so they won't understand each other."
Genesis 11:4-7
We all know that this scripture describes what took place after some folks got together to build a monument to their greatness! Now what would happen if we got together to tell a lost and dying world about our Jesus?
God desires unity in the Body ¾ Satan desires disunity. When we focus more on our differences than on what we have in common God is not pleased. When we gather together we need to focus on God and praise Him for bringing us together to make the Body complete. I spent far too many years focusing on the areas that I wanted God to use me in and far too much time being jealous of the people He did use. It grieves me now to know how displeasing this was to my Lord.
God keeps placing a fire in me to gather different denominations together in praise and worship; to share stories of what He has done in our lives and offer hope to the hurting. When He first began planting the seed of ministry in me I felt our ministry would have something to do with music, but I couldn't see the end. Several times I laughed trying to imagine me being one on one with someone and singing to them, but Proverbs 25:20 teaches, "Singing light songs to the heavyhearted is like pouring salt in their wounds." So, I didn't think that was of God.
However, what some hurting people respond to is music that ministers to them spiritually. Therefore, we organized a series of concerts that ministered to hurting people. It didn't turn out exactly as we planned, but we didn't get discouraged. What we truly enjoyed was having a coffeehouse, where people from all denominations came together to enjoy fellowship, delighting in one another's talents, and worshiping Him!
I don't know about you, but I am tired of different denominations putting other denominations down. I've seen both good and bad in all of them. Our focus should be on Jesus Christ and being what He wants us to be and doing what He wants us to do and He wants us loving one another.
Paul told the people in the Philippian church to: "Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies." (Philippians 4:9) The same is true of Jesus. Whatever we saw Him do, we are to go and do likewise. Think about it church, if you had four children and all they did was sit around and compare their differences, putting each other down for being different, would you be pleased? I think not! So let us come together in His name and praise Him!
Father, I cannot imagine how much our diversity grieves you. Your Word says that we are born again in the spirit. Therefore, there is but one spirit and that is You. Help us to work toward harmony and stand against division. We are one in the spirit, we are one in You. We hunger for wholeness. Feed us by Your spirit the wisdom we need to unite! Then we will have the power we need to operate in the gifts You provided and bring hope to a lost and dying world!
