The following spring, the time of year when kings go to war, David sent Joab
and the Israelite army to destroy the Ammonites. In the process they laid siege
to the city of Rabbah. But David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
Late one
afternoon David got out of bed after taking a nap and went for a stroll on the
roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of
unusual beauty taking a bath. He sent someone to find out who she was, and he
was told, "She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the
Hittite."
2 Samuel 11:1-4
Well, well, well, one look, one move, led to a sad beginning for King David. This wonderful, obedient servant of God weakened. It doesn't take much if we aren't prepared.
David's people felt he was so important that he shouldn't risk being killed in war, so they talked him into staying home. I understand where they were coming from, but what made David forget that the battle isn't his, but the Lord's? Oh, well, that is what happens to some of us when we begin to believe that we are important.
Father, I know that Satan has not changed in all these years and that one of his tools is to make us feel that we are irreplaceable. Protect our leaders and protect us from idleness so that we may not fall as did that man after Your heart, King David.
