Becoming Real

When I was young and tender
My parents fussed and fought.
I heard all this, but never understood
The lessons I was being taught.

Shattered glass, bleeding arms
Oh! What an ugly sight
Why do they scream so much?
Why do they have to fight?

"Get out of my way!"
"Go to your Room!"
Never happiness
Only doom and gloom.

If I could just be Carolyn
And not at all be me,
I feel my parents would love me
They would be happy too, don't you see?

"Why aren't you like your sister?"
I heard this wherever I'd go.
So, I decided to sing and dance,
I'd create a beautiful show.

I sang. I danced. I smiled and laughed,
But it was just never good enough,
Then one day daddy just walked out,
And the going got really rough!

He wouldn't hold me any more.
No longer would my heart really race.
He would no longer read the comics to me
And touch my secret place.

I'll just try harder to please them.
I'll be a sweet girl, you'll see.
When will I be like everyone else?
Won't someone please just love me?

I'm bad, they say, a naughty girl,
Why do men want to touch me there?
"You'll never be good for anything!" they say.
But they tell me I have beautiful hair!

"Men only want you for just one thing,
You must know this at the start."
Mother said, "They'll use you and abuse you,
Walking away with your broken heart."

So, don't ever really talk to anyone
Don't trust, and don't ever feel,
Now, I am betraying all the rules
Very soon, I, Sharon, will be real!!!
